Eight hundred square metres of 12th-century fresco survive on the walls of St Cyril's, the largest surviving ensemble of its date anywhere, and on an ordinary weekday you will have most of it to yourself. The church stands at a busy road junction in northern Kyiv, well off the coach-park circuit, an 18th-century Baroque exterior over a Kyivan Rus core that was never rebuilt.
The other reason to come is six months of work by a young painter. In 1884 an unknown twenty-eight-year-old named Mikhail Vrubel was hired to fill the gaps in the medieval scheme and left with the pictures that made his name. Two artistic ages share these walls, seven centuries apart.
Vsevolod Olhovych, prince of Chernihiv, won the Kyiv throne in 1139, and in the 1140s founded a monastery on the northern approach to the city, dedicated to Cyril of Alexandria. The church at its centre was a burial vault for his own line. Among those laid here was Prince Sviatoslav Vsevolodovych, who died in 1194 and appears in The Tale of Ihor's Campaign.
The monastery enters the written record in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1171, when a princely army camps at Dorohozhychi ‘under St Cyril’. Invasion, decline and rebuilding followed. What you see from the street is mostly Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, who reworked the church between 1748 and 1760 in Ukrainian Baroque — four extra cupolas, a shaped roofline, stucco over 600-year-old brick. His free-standing bell tower stood more than 56 metres; the Soviet authorities pulled it down in 1937 and took the bricks.
The plan is ordinary for its century and extraordinarily intact: a six-pillar, three-apse cross-in-square church roughly 31 by 18 metres, one dome on a high drum, walls laid up in plinth, the thin wide brick of Kyivan Rus. Almost none of it has been lost, and in Kyiv, where most churches of the period survive as excavated footings, that is close to unique.
The paintings are why art historians make the trip. They were plastered over and painted across more than once; uncovering them began with Adrian Prakhov's campaign of 1880–1889 and was finished by restorers in the 1970s. The narthex carries a vast Last Judgement, and on one of its pilasters an angel rolls the sky up like a sheet of parchment — a scene with almost no parallels, the closest a 12th-century mosaic at Torcello in the Venetian lagoon. The apses hold the lives of Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria, cycles rare even in Byzantine art, Slavic saints including Cyril and Methodius, and the Virgin Orans. Colour has gone quiet with age. Stand still for a minute and faces begin to come out of the wall.
It was Prakhov who brought in Vrubel, then an academy student from St Petersburg with no reputation. He worked in the church from May to November 1884. On the choir gallery he painted the Descent of the Holy Spirit, giving every apostle a face found among living Kyivans; in a narthex niche he set a Lamentation; elsewhere, an Entry into Jerusalem and the heads of the prophets Moses and Solomon.
The four icons for the marble iconostasis came the following year, painted on sheets of zinc in Italy while he studied the old masters in Venice: Christ, St Cyril, St Athanasius and a Mother of God with the Child. For the last he used Emiliya Prakhova, his director's wife, and what he produced is not an icon type but a young woman with enormous, apprehensive eyes. Accounts of his Kyiv years have him in love with her. Contemporaries reached for Raphael's Sistine Madonna as a comparison; the plainer reading is that a private unhappiness went straight onto the panel. Ivan Izhakevych and Mykola Pymonenko painted here in the same restoration, but Vrubel is the one people come for.
The address is vul. Oleny Telihy 12, at the junction with vul. Kyrylivska — a street that carries the monastery's name, restored in 2015 after decades as vul. Frunze. Dorohozhychi metro is a little over a kilometre away; buses and trolleybuses along Kyrylivska stop near the gate.
Two institutions share the building. The church was closed for worship and made a museum in 1929; since 1965 it has been a branch of what is now the Sofia Kyivska National Reserve, whose conservators look after the frescoes. A men's monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was re-established here in 2011, and services are held. Hours move with both calendars, and more so since 2022 — check the reserve's current schedule before setting out, and reckon on an air-raid alert interrupting a visit.
Give it an hour at minimum; the frescoes do not give themselves up at a glance. It is dim and cold inside in any season — 12th-century walls do that — so take a layer. And people pray here: the quiet is not only museum etiquette.
