The last thirteen kilometres to Drahobrat take about forty minutes, and no ordinary car will do them. You leave yours in a paid yard in Yasinia and climb into a GAZ-66 army truck or a Soviet UAZ van, which grinds up a rocky, rutted track to a bowl at 1,400m under Mt Stih.
That barrier is the character of the place. Drahobrat is the highest ski base in Ukraine, it holds snow from November into late April and often to the first days of May, and the price of that snow is that reaching it counts as a small expedition. Nobody arrives here by accident.

The highest snow in the country
The resort sits in a hollow on the Svydovets massif at 1,300–1,400m, ringed by Mt Stih (1,704m), Zhandarm (1,763m) and the twin summits of Blyznytsia, the greater of which reaches 1,881m and is the high point of the ridge. That horseshoe holds cold air and traps snow: while the low Carpathian resorts are green and shut by early April, Drahobrat is still turning lifts.
Hoverla, at 2,061m the highest mountain in Ukraine, stands on the eastern skyline with Petros beside it. Above the base there is no tree cover to break the wind, and cloud arrives faster than the forecast suggests. A bluebird morning in Yasinia promises nothing at the top.

Getting up
Yasinia, in the Rakhiv district of Zakarpattia, is the staging post. Night trains from Kyiv stop there and the road in is good tarmac; the problem starts where the tarmac ends. Drivers wait at the station.
A seat in a UAZ ‘bukhanka’ runs around 350–400 UAH; you wait for it to fill before it leaves. Hiring a whole jeep or a GAZ-66 costs into the low thousands and goes when you say so, which matters with children, boards and bags. Parking in Yasinia starts at about 100 UAH a day. Simplest is to book the transfer through your hotel — it removes the haggling, and the owners know what the road is doing that week.

Ten kilometres of piste, and everything off it
The marked skiing is small: roughly 10 km in total, against something like 66 km at Bukovel. It is also split between four operators who do not share a ticket — Vershyna Karpat, Karpatska Chaika, Drahobrat (the old Doppelmayr) and Oaza. Each has its own office and its own prepaid units debited at the turnstile, and there is no combined pass on the mountain. Decide which slopes you want, then buy from that operator.
Vershyna Karpat and Karpatska Chaika run the two main chairlifts, about 1,200 and 1,250m long, and between them cover the widest range, from broad blues to reds of up to 1,500m. The old Doppelmayr drag serves a single technical red. Oaza, beside the hotel of the same name, has the gentlest terrain and the shortest queues.
The reds and blacks are frequently left ungroomed. That is deliberate, and a large part of why people come.
Freeride
Drahobrat is where Ukrainian off-piste skiing actually happens. From the top stations the terrain opens onto broad unpisted faces and backcountry lines towards Zhandarm and Blyznytsia, and in a good winter the cover is deep enough to justify the truck ride on its own.
It is also avalanche terrain, above the treeline, with patchy signal and no patrol beyond the marked runs. Carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, know how to use all three under pressure, and hire a guide who has watched this snowpack build rather than one who arrived with you.

Papers, and the long spring
Drahobrat lies in the Rakhiv district but outside the five-kilometre border strip, and no border-zone permit is generally needed for the Svydovets massif. Border guards do sometimes ask travellers at Yasinia station where they are heading. Carry identification; men aged 18 to 60 need military registration documents or current data in the Reserv+ app. If your route runs closer to the Romanian frontier, clear it with the Mukachevo Border Detachment first; applications can take up to ten working days.
The season worth planning around is the tail of it: as the snow retreats off the polonyna, crocuses come up through the last of it, and the trucks that carry skiers in February carry walkers up in June for the Blyznytsia ridge.

Who it suits
Bukovel and Drahobrat are both ski resorts and they are not the same holiday. Bukovel is groomed, serviced, expensive and fifteen minutes from a railway station, with a run for every ability and a waterpark for the days you don't ski. Drahobrat is small, rough, hard to reach, and has the deepest snow, the longest season and the best off-piste in the country. Confident skiers and snowboarders get more here for their money than anywhere else in Ukraine. Nervous beginners, and anyone who wants an evening of restaurants and shops, will be happier down the valley.
Accommodation is compact and mostly ski-in, ski-out, often with half board included, which is worth taking given how few places there are to eat. The Yalynka kolyba does the big Hutsul plates; the Kuriatnia is where people end up afterwards. Rental starts around 200–500 UAH a day. Bring cash — several lift operators take nothing else.
