Grape Cluster Mini-Sculpture

A bottle of Moldovan wine has been sealed inside a bronze grape cluster on Uzhhorod's Kyivska embankment since April 2016, and the plan has always been to cut it back out. Twenty years, the sculptor said. That puts the reckoning somewhere around 2036, when the bronze gets opened and somebody finally learns what two decades inside a sealed metal grape did to a bottle of ‘Bouquet of Moldova’.

Until then it is the least verifiable claim on this embankment and the most repeated. The cluster is hand-sized, cast bead by bead, and clamped to the stone parapet above the river.

Grapes are the city's coat of arms

Uzhhorod does not put grapes on things by accident. Three golden vines on a blue shield are the city's arms, adopted in June 1990 and copied from far older civic seals — a grape branch appears on the town seal of 1591, and a 1635 version shows a stem with three branches and two clusters hanging below the leaves, trained in the rounded method local growers used. The vineyards behind that heraldry are old enough to have needed importing expertise: in 1254 King Béla IV brought German and Italian vintners into the region to work them properly.

So the miniature is the municipal emblem, shrunk and bolted to a handrail over the Uzh. Anyone who has glanced at a city letterhead can read it that way. The bottle inside is the part nobody guesses.

The bottle, and who put it there

The cluster was unveiled by an official delegation from Moldova rather than by the usual municipal line-up, which is the tell: this was a diplomatic object, marking cultural and trade ties between two wine countries sitting either side of Ukraine. Mykhailo Kolodko made it. The wine he closed up inside is ‘Bouquet of Moldova’, a sweet red that Moldovans will tell you rewards keeping.

Whether it is rewarding anything inside a bronze grape fixed to a river wall, through every Transcarpathian winter since 2016, is a separate question. The city appears content to wait and find out.

It sits on the stone railing of Kyivska naberezhna at 48.621436, 22.297416, a short walk along the same parapet from Švejk and his dumpling. This was number twenty-six in a city collection that has since run past sixty, and it is one of the quieter entries — no pose, no face, nothing that photographs from a distance.
