Carpathia Mini-Sculpture

Fifty-eight nautical miles of ice-strewn water lay between the Carpathia and the Titanic's last reported position when the distress signal reached her wireless room late on 14 April 1912. Captain Arthur Rostron turned his ship around, drove her above her rated speed through a dark scattered with bergs, and came up on the lifeboats around four in the morning — an hour and a half after the Titanic had gone. More than 700 people were taken aboard. She docked in New York on 18 April.

A bronze model of that ship is fixed to the embankment railing on pl. Teatralna in Uzhhorod. The hull is hollow, and it is meant to be lit.

Why a Cunard liner is moored to the Uzh

The name is the first answer. She was called after the mountain range that fills the south and east of this region, and that echo is what drew the sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko to her. Her timetable is the better answer. From 1904 the Carpathia spent her winters on the Trieste–Fiume–New York run, carrying emigrants out of the Kingdom of Hungary — which is what Uzhhorod and the Rusyn villages around it were until 1918. Fiume was the kingdom's designated port of departure, and the emigration of those decades emptied households across the whole of Subcarpathia. The ship that pulled the Titanic's survivors out of the Atlantic spent most of her working life carrying people from this part of the world in the other direction.

The rescuer's own ending

The Carpathia did not survive the next war. On 17 July 1918, in convoy off the south coast of Ireland, she took three torpedoes from the German submarine U-55. Five crewmen were killed in the explosions; the other 218 aboard got into the boats and were picked up by HMS Snowdrop. Her wreck was found in 1999, lying at around 150m.

The candle in the hull

The portholes are pierced right through the casting, and the hull is open enough to take a tealight or a lit match. Set one going and the row of windows comes up along the waterline. Guides in Uzhhorod suggest doing it for the people who never reached a boat that night — a small, quiet thing to do in the middle of a riverside walk, and it reads properly only in the half-hour after the sun is down. Come at dusk with a tealight in your pocket.

Kolodko moored her here on 15 April 2013, the date of the rescue. She sits on the river side of the railing at pl. Teatralna, a step from the Mykolaichyk — the small helper of St Nicholas that went up in December 2010 as the first of the several dozen palm-sized bronzes now scattered through the old town.
