Someone cut the year 1734 into the wall of the little rock church at Subich, and that scratch is the firmest thing anyone knows about the place. Everything else is inference: crosses with crescent-shaped ends chiselled into the limestone, graffiti in the same hand, a couple of monks' signatures. No charter, no chronicle, no founder's name.
What you walk to is three small openings in Mt Monastyryshche, 40m above the Dnister, on a ledge about two metres wide with the drop beginning where it ends. The site belongs to the same line of cliff monasteries as Bakota downstream, and locals call it Bakota's younger brother. It gets a fraction of Bakota's visitors — partly the road, partly the last 800m, which have to be walked down a path that runs beside a cliff.
The first cave is natural — a mouth roughly 4m wide and 1.2m high, with an interior a 1949 expedition measured at 1.75m. You enter it bent over. Tradition says the monks used it for storage.
The second was cut by hand, and it was the church: 1.8m high, about 1.1m wide, with five niches carved for icons. This is where the 1734 date sits. Two metres southwest is the third object, a shallow niche with a small portico, understood as a chapel. Crosses are cut across the walls throughout, one of them large, beside the entrance. When the access track was pushed through, workers turned up fragments of an old fresco in the caves — the strongest hint that this was a decorated interior and not just a shelter.
Guidebooks and church tradition put the founding somewhere between the 16th and 18th centuries. A minority claim goes further, dating the cells to the 10th–13th. The datable evidence supports neither earlier position: the 1734 inscription, the palaeography of the graffiti, the form of the crosses and the icon niches all point to the 18th century for the church and chapel as they now stand. That does not settle when people first used the natural cave. It means nobody can prove an earlier date from what is left.
A local priest, Josyp Sulkovskyi, published on the site in 1887; Yukhym Sitsinskyi, who catalogued most of Podillia's antiquities, worked it over later. Village memory adds what documents cannot: old people in Subich still tell of hermits who lived in these caves, prayed, wove cloth and worked as craftsmen.
If you are visiting both, the comparison to draw is not two versions of one thing. Bakota is a princely-era monastery with 11th–12th-century inscriptions and 19 graves cut into its floor. Subich is a small, late, hand-worked hermitage in a corner of the same cliff country — and the one where the carving on the wall still tells you the year.
The monastery spent decades abandoned, and at some point even the path to it was lost. Its return is entirely local work. People from Subich and neighbouring Kalachkivtsi cut a way back down, cleared the caves and built a chapel on the clifftop above them; a villager who is an army doctor led the effort.
The result is modest and maintained. A large white cross stands over the water with a spring running beneath it, the chapel sits on the rim at 40m, and inside the caves there are icons wrapped in embroidered cloths, candles, and room for a few people at a time. Someone looks after this place. It is not an institution.
Subich is about 30km from Kamianets-Podilskyi. Come by car and budget for the road: some 10km of poor surface off the Stara Ushytsia route, with the Subich turn on the right just before Kalachkivtsi. The worst is inside the village, where the road is broken up in places — awkward in a low car, worse in the wet. Drive almost the full length of the village to the new chapel at roughly 48.5980, 26.8314. That is where the walking starts.
From there it is around 800m and about 20 minutes down, on a narrow overgrown path beside the drop. Take that seriously: the fall is over 100m in places, there are no railings, and in rain it is not worth attempting. Boots and long trousers — the scrub has closed over the trail. Keep children close. At the bottom the two cave mouths appear in the rock face.
Nothing is sold here, so carry water and food, and a clean container for the spring. Directly above the caves are the Subich rocks, the clifftop viewpoints most visitors come for: monastery below, panorama on top. Subich is too small for beds — Bakota is the usual base, with more hotels in Kamianets-Podilskyi, an hour away.
Нелегкий, а подекуди й справді дуже важкий шлях цілком окупається неймовірними краєвидами. Це ще один напрочуд гарний куточок України! Спуск до монастиря непростий: вузька, заросла й досить небезпечна стежка. Дітей туди краще не брати, тим більше що на місці, по суті, немає чого особливо дивитися.
Надзвичайно гарний вид на Дністер. До монастиря ми не спускалися, бо було сиро і вже вечоріло, тож просто не встигли б дійти. За 3 роки дорога не змінилася: щойно з'їжджаєш з траси, її майже нема, а останні 10 км через села суцільно в ямах. Та все одно це безперечно варте поїздки. Рекомендую.
Дуже красиве місце з чудовими краєвидами. Якщо плануєте дійти до монастиря, врахуйте, що шлях проходить через церкву вниз до річки і займає приблизно 20 хвилин. Йти там нелегко, бо стежки місцями мають круті підйоми та спуски.
