Lake Svitiaz

Svitiaz bottoms out at 58.4 metres, deeper than any other natural lake in Ukraine — and at the village beach you can wade 100 metres out and still be standing on firm sand with the water at your chest. The two facts describe one lake: a wide pale shelf of sand that turns bath-warm by July, and a karst hole in the middle no swimmer goes near.

It is the biggest of the two dozen or so lakes in the Shatsk group, and the one people mean when they say they are going to the Shatsk lakes: 27.5 sq km of water, over 30 km of shoreline, 180 million cubic metres in the basin. No river runs into it — rain and groundwater rising through Mesozoic chalk fill it instead, so there is no silt on the bottom.

What the park protects

The lake lies inside the Shatsk National Nature Park, created in December 1983 and covering 48,977 hectares in the corner of Volhynia where Ukraine meets Poland and Belarus. The wetlands have been Ramsar-listed since 1995, and since 2012 the park has formed the Ukrainian third of the trilateral UNESCO West Polesie Biosphere Reserve. That means rules rather than ticket gates: a small vehicle charge at the entry posts, tents at designated recreation points and not wherever the view is best, fires in the built rings. Rangers check.

The lake is going down

By mid-June 2026 the gauge read 119 cm, 21 cm lower than the same date a year before, and at the Hriada tract the water had walked out from its old line by as much as 60 metres. Spring did most of it: March delivered 18 per cent of its normal rainfall, April 48, May 41, and the park puts around 80 per cent of Svitiaz's water balance down to precipitation. Officials have also blamed heavy abstraction, Soviet-era drainage and the Khotyslav chalk quarry over the Belarusian border.

Swimmers get the mild version — more warm shallow water, a wider safe zone for children — but the dry litter under the pines makes fire the season's real worry.

The island in the middle

Seven hectares of woodland sit in the open water under two names. Most people say the Island of Lovers; older residents say the Island of the Cosmonauts, because a rest house here served Soviet crews, Pavlo Popovych and Yuriy Artiukhin among them. That building has since been stripped and pulled apart. What is left is the wildlife: a protected ornithological zone with over a hundred plant species recorded, and cormorants and grey herons nesting in the tall poplars.

Boats go out from the village — a guided rowing boat, a hired catamaran, a SUP. Go early, while the water is glass and the birds are on the nests.

Three origin stories

Volhynia offers three explanations and no preference between them. A city stood here and went under when the prince's daughter prayed for deliverance from an army, its people surfacing as white flowers that killed anyone who touched them. A giant loved a girl who loved a shepherd: the lake is what he wept, the island his heart. And an old man punished a village of jeering children by lifting a boulder with his staff and letting the water out.

What to eat, and what to skip

Shatsk doughnuts are the local trophy: yeast-risen, deep-fried, split and loaded with fresh bilberry, poppy seed or condensed milk, sold hot from the beach stalls and the Shatsk market first thing. They were 60 hryvnia apiece in 2026 and the queue forms anyway. For a sit-down meal, look for tench baked in sour cream in a clay pot.

Smoked ‘Svitiaz eel’ is the region's signature delicacy, and you should leave it alone. Eels were stocked into these lakes last century as elvers shipped from the Atlantic; the species has since collapsed across its range, and Ukraine put the European eel in the Red Data Book as endangered in 2021. Catching, selling and buying it are offences, and what is smoked and sold here now comes in from abroad.

Staying, and the border

Shatsk town, 10 km east, holds the market, the bank and the pharmacy; the beds are in Svitiaz village and at the Hriada, Hushove and Ilichivka tracts, from a guarded tent field to beachfront hotels and cottages with a wood-fired hot tub. The crush runs from about 5 July to 20 August; late June and the first ten days of September give the same water at a fraction of the noise.

Shatsk lies inside the border zone but not the restricted five-kilometre strip, so carry your passport or ID card and expect it checked; men aged 18 to 60 need a military registration document too. Villages, beaches and the embankment need no permit — the forest tracks beyond them do, applied for in writing to the border service in advance. And bring a serious repellent: the bogs behind the pines produce mosquitoes at dusk.
