Stryiskyi Park Orangery

Open the door of the glass pavilion in the middle of Stryiskyi Park on a grey Lviv afternoon and the air changes at once — warm and wet, loud with the screech of a parrot somewhere in the leaves. This is the city's orangery, a working glasshouse where palms and tropical greenery have been kept under one roof since the 1890s.

It is the only place in Lviv where exotic plants and live animals share the same building. Most people come to Stryiskyi Park for the shaded avenues and the swan pond; the orangery is the twenty-minute detour that turns a walk into a small expedition — best saved for the days when the weather outside has given up on you.

The park that came first

The glasshouse would be nothing without its setting. Stryiskyi Park was laid out at the end of the 19th century on the site of Lviv's old Stryi cemetery, closed back in 1823, and it took its shape from Arnold Röhring, the city's park inspector, whose plan called for some 40,000 trees and left room for a lake, flowerbeds and a conservatory.

In 1894 the upper terrace became the stage for the Galician Regional Exhibition — a vast showcase of the province that pulled in more than a million visitors and covered the slopes with over a hundred temporary pavilions. The crowds are a century gone. The park they came to see is still here, and still counted among the finest in Europe.

Palms, parrots and a pool of carp

The pavilion standing today went up in 1895 and has been working ever since. Gravel paths thread between palms and dense tropical planting held in permanent summer, watered now by a fine misting system on a timer.

The plants are only half of it. Parrots call from the greenery, turtles bask at the edges, and a small pool near the centre holds a few fat decorative carp. On a cold day the contrast does all the work — winter pressing on the glass from outside, a wet green July within. Stand still a moment and listen; the birds make the place.

Swans, and two hundred kinds of tree

Step back out and the orangery turns out to occupy one of the prettiest corners of the park. An artificial pond lies just below it, mute swans working the water — the photograph half the visitors to Lviv seem to carry home.

The grounds around it are an arboretum in their own right: more than 200 species of trees and shrubs, many of them rare or exotic, from ginkgo to weeping beech. Glasshouse, water, swans and old timber together make the scene that earns Stryiskyi Park its name, so don't rush the last stretch back to the gates.

The years it nearly lost

The orangery has not always looked this well. For a stretch it stood neglected and slid toward ruin, its collection thinning and its glass going dim. A restoration eventually brought the park's centrepiece back — replanted and repaired, green again, the parrots and turtles returned to their places.

The sources give conflicting dates for the various repairs, so trust none of them too far. What matters is that the work saved a real end-of-century glasshouse still doing the job it was built for. That last part is rarer than it sounds.

Finding the glasshouse

The orangery sits deep in the park, beside the monument to Jan Kiliński — the Polish insurgent leader cast here in bronze in 1895, and one of the easiest landmarks to navigate by. Follow the main avenues downhill toward the pond and the glass pavilion is hard to miss.

Stryiskyi Park lies in the southern part of the city, an easy walk or a short tram ride from the centre. The park itself never closes, though the orangery keeps its own opening hours and entry rules — both worth checking on the spot before you go in. Plan a loop with no schedule attached. This is a place to linger.
